The paper outlines the postwar transformation of American higher education from expansive, social-democratic policies based on »guns and buttern to cunent policies based on privatization, globalization, and »economic competitiveness« and leading to increasing economic and political inequality. The effects of the adoption of the research university model on institutional and disciplinary competition are surveyed in reference to recent ideological debates in the fields American Studies and Cultural Studies.
