Abstract

Football is a fascinating sociological phenomenon. No other sport captivates more people globally today. Every weekend, millions of people around the world go to stadiums and fields to watch football matches. Modern professional football has come a long way from its origins as an emancipatory working-class sport. The global industry that has developed around football since the 1990s now represents the »very embodiment of unbridled capitalism’s worst excesses« (Correia).
