When was the decolonisation?
A lesson from the Caribbean

Using the example of the Caribbean, this article discusses some of the paradoxes of (de)colonisation in the 21st century as characteristics of an unequal modern/colonial world-system, for which there have so far only been rudimentary global solutions. To date, the Caribbean contains overseas territories that administratively belong to the United States, as well as over a third of the territories that are still governed by European countries. Forgotten European borders of still-colonised territories in the Caribbean, and the sale of citizenship rights in the case of independent Caribbean areas complicate the narrative of completed administrative decolonisation. Such paradoxes often only become visible in crisis situations, as in the face of so-called natural disasters or political decisions such as Brexit. They show that the coloniality of power creates dependency in both formerly colonised and areas which are still occupied today.
