Abstract

MSC buying into HHLA at the Port of Hamburg marks a new stage in the privatization of ports: shipping companies gain structural control over transport routes, hinterland logistics, and labor relations, while state regulatory capacity declines and workers risk losing power resources. In this article, we discuss from the perspectives of Labour Geography and the Sociology of Work how this shift affects the scope for action and conflict dynamics of dockworkers, and which questions it raises for their collective agency amid increasing privatization and rationalization.
